Avocado Trees for sale Online

Native to southern Mexico, these subtropical trees grow best in semi-humid climate zones 9 to 11. They thrive best in temperatures from 60 to 80 degrees. It is important to note that they become less productive in temperatures of 100 degrees and above. Avocado trees can be planted in containers and grow indoors, but only for a temporary amount of time. This is because they can grow upwards of 30 feet at maturity. However, if you live in a cooler climate you can plant your tree in a pot and place it near a south-facing window of your home. Feel free to bring your tree outside when temperatures get warm enough for your tree to flourish. It is important to note that avocados do not ripen on the tree. It is important to pick them at their mature sizes while they are still firm to the touch. Then let them ripen at room temperature for a week or two, or until they become soft enough to eat.

Types of Avocado Trees

Hass Avocado Trees

Hass Avocado Trees produce the most widely consumed avocado worldwide! This tree is just barely over the age of 100 years old, making it a fairly young cultivar. In the 1920s an amateur horticulturalists took a leap of faith on this tree and the rest is history! They have a sensitive root system but are otherwise easy to grow, and even self-pollinating. They do best when planted in growing zones 9 to 11, but can also be grown in containers up to zone 4. Remember to always bring your potted avocado trees inside in cold weather.

Monroe Avocado Trees

These cold-hardy trees grow virtually anywhere, a rarity for an avocado tree. They are unique because they produce an abundant amount of fruit as early as their first year. This plant can survive through temperatures as low as 26 degrees and require a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight each day. They produce their fruits from November to January every year.

How to Care for an Avocado Tree

Water

When watering your tree make sure to water deeply on a regular basis. You can let their soil dry out slightly before their next watering. To conserve moisture you should mulch your trees with 3 or 4 inches of coarse wood chips. However, make sure to leave a couple of inches between the mulch and the tree trunk.

Soil

Avocado trees love fine, sandy, and loamy soils. They also need well-draining soil to prevent their roots from absorbing too much water. They do not tolerate any heavy, clay soils. If your soil needs some tweaking it is best to use sand or any other gritty material to help soak up excess moisture.

Light

These trees grow best in full sun areas of any landscape. They require at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Even though these trees can tolerate slight shade, they do best in bright, direct, and unfiltered sunlight. The more light that shines on their leaves, the more your tree will thrive.

Fertilizer

During the first year of your tree's life, we recommend you do not use any fertilizer. After that, you are free to use any well-balanced citrus tree fertilizer. We suggest using Espoma Citrus-tone at Garden Goods Direct.

Harvesting Avocados

The harvest months are the most exciting time to have a home-grown fruit tree. It is important to note that the harvesting times for each variation of the avocado tree are different. For Hass Avocado Trees, they are ready to harvest as early as February and it can extend as late as September. By contrast, any Cold Hardy Avocado Tree usually is ready for harvest between November and March.

Avocados do not fall from their trees naturally, they must be picked off by hand. If you do not pick your avocados off their tree, they will simply not ripen until they are picked. It is also important to note that the longer you leave the fruits on their trees, the richer they will taste.
